Antigua & Barbuda

Sunny Getaway

Antigua, Barbuda, and Redonda form the independent nation of Antigua and Barbuda, within the Commonwealth of Nations. They are part of the Leeward Islands in the West Indies. ... Antigua and Barbuda became an independent nation in 1981, but it is still British in many of its traditions.

Positioned where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet, it's known for reef-lined beaches, rainforests and resorts. Its English Harbour is a yachting hub and the site of historic Nelson's Dockyard. In the capital, St. John's, the national museum displays indigenous and colonial artifacts.

Antigua’s coastline is intricate, with bays and headlands fringed with reefs and shoals; several inlets, including Parham and English Harbour, afford anchorage for shipping, and St. John’s has a deepwater harbor. An absence of mountains and forests distinguishes Antigua from the other Leeward Islands. Barbuda, formerly Dulcina, lies 25 miles (40 km) north of Antigua. Barbuda is a flat, coral island with plenty of forest, but no natural streams or lakes. Codrington, located in the west lagoon is Barbuda's largest city.
